THE LOG TRUCK & WOODCHIP TRUCK COUNT
FOR 1 DAY AT 1 SPOT IN NORTH WEST TASMANIA

Results of 24 Hour Timber Industry Truck Count.
Tasmania Australia

Conducted on 23rd December, 2003 by members of the Tarkine National Coalition at the junction of the Bass Hwy and Wilmot Street in Burnie, Tasmania, and overlooking the woodchip unloading ramp at the Burnie Wharf.

For the entire 24 hours of Tuesday the 23rd December, 2003 over 30 people assisted in counting timber industry truck movements.

Low loaders etc. were not included as only timber and woodchip carrying vehicles were counted.


RESULTS:
A total of 294 timber truck movements were counted in the 24 hour period.
132 woodchip loaded trucks were visible from the intersection or passed us directly.
59 trucks carrying woodchip quality logs passed the intersection.
25 trucks carrying sawlogs passed the intersection.
78 empty trucks passed the intersection or were seen coming down Mount Street.
There were 31 trucks loaded with old growth forest timber of which 30 were woodchip quality and 1 carried sawlog quality old growth forest timber.
There were 20 trucks loaded with native forest re-growth of which 18 were woodchip quality and 2 were sawlog quality.
There were 33 trucks loaded with plantation timber, both native and exotic, of which 11 were woodchip quality and 22 were sawlog quality.
The busiest time of day for truck movements in Burnie occurred between 2pm and 3pm with 25 truck movements counted. Followed closely by the hours between 8am and 9am as well as 11am and 12noon with 23 trucks counted each of these hours.
The first truck of the day was counted at 12:10am and the final truck was counted at 11:59pm.
